Greetings Riding Friends Near and Afar All,
– How You Start the New Year; Is How You Want To Spend the Coming Year –
Subject Today is January 1st Polar Bear Run, wherever you might be in Louisiana (or other).
Why not start a Tradition in your Home Town of a Polar Bear Run,
It doesn’t have to be a “cause-du-jour”.
Make it a Breakfast/Brunch, Visit with riders that show up, then decide on somewhere to ride to get something to eat/drink/warm-up (40+ miles hopefully), watch the game, head to the house or another couple stops..
In the past we have met at Fast food joints, ie a Dairy Queen (pancakes and coffee) and then rode to a Legion Hall for Bloody Mary’s and football games , other times we’ve had breakfast-brunch catered at an Establishment, then rode to the next town to another Motorcycle Friendly Establishment.
It doesn’t take much, call email a buddy and go out to ride “Be Seen and Not Looked For” (in the coming year too) roll back home and share a New Year’s meal with friends and family, find an appropriate way to bring cheer.
Whatever you do, your actions will create good karma, which helps everyone.
V/S,
Nite Train
The following is copied from an email I received the other day. Is anyone game to join me on a New Years Day ride? If yes, leave me a comment with your suggestions where to ... leaving from Kerhonkson NY.

_New Years was a gorgeous day for January in the Catskills! I didn't look at the thermometer as I didn't want logic to deter me from pulling Rosie out of the barn for a ride. She popped right off and we headed out to run errands; picking up cat food and stopping by to say hello to my son, Dovan. John, my son's housemate, talked about seeing signs for an Indian Reservation up on Route 52 where the old Tamarack Hotel used to be. Growing up here, this puzzled us both, so I decided to ride up and check it out. _Riding into the "rez" I noted a sign pointing to "models and sales". The place was deserted. The museum looked as though it was not yet operational. The gate was open, so I went on past the Private Property signs thinking to cut over to Tamarack Road. There were new windows in some of the buildings, what seemed to me evidence of logging, and a general mess. I kept waiting for someone to appear and ask why I was there. No one. The jewel was one building in particular that drew my attention and I thought, "That would make a wonderful cultural center!" After returning home, somewhat chilled, I looked to see what I could find on the internet about this "rez". 250 acres slated for tax auction by the Town of Wawarsing as of last April. Apparently there has been much controversy regarding the legitimacy of the tribe and its leader, who had hoped to build another Catskill casino at this location. I was disappointed to find the intent had been to develop a "cash cow" rather than revive the rich Native history of this area! Post Script: The Tamarack Lodge was completely destroyed by fire on April 8th, 2012. There is nothing left up there now. |

I've been riding now for over 40 years, beginning in the dirt on a Honda SL-70 when I was 12. I always leaned more toward trials riding than racing, but also loved riding the tracks (flat track and motocross) with the guys I came up with when they'd practice (on a Honda Elsinore 125). Our motto then was "If you don't go down you're not riding hard enough!" ... not finding your limits. Archives
